OAK PARK SCHOOL HISTORY

The school was opened in 1957. It was late opening due to the Suez Crisis holding up deleveries. First year students were temporarily housed at Trosnant Junior School while the main body of students attended Havant Secondary School which later became a Junior School. The school originally opened as two seperate schools Oak Park Secondary Boy's School and Oak Park Secondary Girl's school. One was the mirror image of the other and the main hall was shared. It is rumoured that the someone got the plans around the wrong way and that is why the boiler house was at the front.

The Boy's School first head was Lawrence Gaulter 1957-1967. The second head was Mr Owen. Mrs Hodge was the head of the girls school that I remember. They have now built houses on the playing fields of the school and two of the roads are called Gaulter Close and Hodge Close!

TOP WACKY kids' Comedy Drama starring MARCUS FRANCIS as Graham, who also played Sean Tinnersley in 'Going Out'. Graham was a well-off snotty kid who kept referring to himself as 'a leader of men'. The rest of the gang - Lux, a big tall dopey one with black-framed glasses, William, the second-in-command who wanted to be gang leader causing friction between himself and leader-of-men Graham, Robert and Keith, who were best buddies and always fighting. A spoilt Violet Elizabeth type girl called Mildred with a huge family who popped up everywhere (referred to as 'Daddy Blight','Auntie Blight' etc. by the gang) was always following them and trying to get in the gang (why?). Episodes - one where they all dressed up as Graham for some reason and ran round a shopping centre, one where William dressed up as a girl to take Mildred's part in the school play when she got chicken-pox, one where there was a go-kart race in the town with Graham as one entry and Mildred and William coached by Mildred's Dad as another which caused much dissent. Also an episode where one Mildred had a birthday party and members of a rival gang came
